An Indian minister called Leno’s comments “objectionable” and said “freedom does not mean hurting the sentiments of others”.

Oh yes, it damned well does!

Given that the joke was ‘Rmoney is an obscenely wealthy plutocrat, for whom a golden temple would be a summer home’, not ‘Rmoney is secretly a Sikh’, their displeasure is misplaced.

They ARE the ones who named it the Golden Temple, aren’t they?

Freedom of speech definitely protects objectionable comments—be they about religion, ethnicity, whatever—but that doesn’t necessary make them commendable. Anyone who has ever flinched after having an epithet spat at them can attest to that. I don’t watch Leno, so I don’t know what he’s said about Sikhs in the past, but this doesn’t seem especially egregious to me.

People use “Mecca” all the time: gambling Mecca, shopping Mecca, surfing Mecca, fashion Mecca, etc. I don’t take offense at any of those even though the activity being referred to is often something decidedly distasteful to Muslims. *shrugs*
